Carolyn Russell is a sophomore from Chicago, Illinois majoring in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences with the intention to go on to graduate school and one day work as a speech-language pathologist.
Carolyn suggests incoming students get involved in campus life as much as possible.
“I have met some of my best friends from joining organizations on campus,” she says. “Step out of your comfort zone and try things you never have before. Mizzou offers so many amazing organizations that fit everyone’s hobbies and needs. Being from Chicago, I was worried about being so far from home, but getting involved has made Mizzou feel like my home away from home.”
In addition to serving on the School of Health Professions Student Ambassador Leadership Team, Carolyn is a member of the Love Your Melon Crew and the Adaptive Gymnastics program at Mizzou.
How did you choose your major?
I took the intro to Health Professions course, which helped me better understand what Speech Pathologists did each day. After talking to the speech pathologist after class and shadowing one at my local elementary school, I knew this was the career I wanted to pursue.
What has been your favorite Mizzou memory?
My favorite Mizzou memory has been homecoming and the atmosphere it brings to campus. I love house decorations on Friday nights and the parade and football game on Saturday. The weekend is filled with friends and family who are all rooting for the same team, which is such a special experience!
If you could have dinner with one famous Mizzou alum, who would it be and why?
I would want to have dinner with Brad Pitt — I would love to know how his life has changed from being a Mizzou student to an internationally known movie star!
What is your favorite ice cream shop in CoMo?
Andy’s, of course!
