Aléja Bates is a junior from Peoria, Illinois.  She is a health science major with an emphasis in rehabilitation sciences with hopes of becoming a physical therapist.

“The best thing about my major is learning about all the different aspects of health sciences,” Aléja says.  “There are numerous factors that contribute to health professions.  Health science courses focus on real world information, which makes the content relatable.  Also, there are great opportunities associated with taking these courses that are only offered to health science students.  I would recommend any student interested in becoming a health professional major in health sciences.”

In addition to serving as a School of Health Professions student ambassador, Aléja is a member of the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students and the Mizzou Black Women’s Initiative.

Why should students choose Mizzou?

Mizzou is a big campus with a lot to offer.  There are numerous resources available to students to enhance their college experience.  Mizzou is a well-known educational institution equipped with resources and individuals to make your educational experience one to remember. Something is offered here for everyone, down to organizations, services, resources, and much more. Most importantly, Mizzou is very diverse and is filled with students from all over the world.  Mizzou is a great place to form new relationships, connections, and memories.

How did you choose your major?

I decided to pursue a health science degree because I care about the overall health and well-being of others and knew this path would best prepare me for my future career. I want to help others throughout the process of regaining and maintaining their wellness. I greatly appreciate all the resources and programs provided that focus on health science at Mizzou. Health care is a rewarding career path because there are many important components that will benefit and contribute to an individual’s wellness, and it’s nice to see how greatly Mizzou values that.

What has been your favorite Mizzou moment?

My favorite Mizzou memory thus far has been Welcome Week. Welcome Week is a new event that started at MU in 2018. I was provided the opportunity to be a Welcome Week leader and it was a great experience! The most exciting part was serving as a reliable resource for incoming freshmen and building relationships.

How have your achieved academic success during your time as an undergraduate?

I have achieved academic success by attending office hours with my professors and communicating effectively with them, as well as taking advantage of free tutoring and open help sessions.

If you could re-live one Mizzou sports memory, what would it be and why?

My first college football game, it was a great experience and we won!
