Aléja Bates is a sophomore from Peoria, Illinois.  She is a health science major with an emphasis in rehabilitation sciences with hopes of becoming a physical therapist.

“The best thing about my major is learning about all the different aspects of health sciences,” Aléja says.  “There are numerous factors that contribute to health professions.  Health science courses focus on real world information, which makes the content relatable.  Also, there are great opportunities associated with taking these courses that are only offered to health science students.  I would recommend any student interested in becoming a health professional major in health sciences.”

In addition to serving as a School of Health Professions student ambassador, Aléja is a member of Minority Association of Pre-Health Students and the Mizzou Black Women’s Initiative.

What is your favorite place on campus?

My favorite spot on campus is the lower level of the student center.  This space is very quiet and intimate, which is great when you want to relax between classes.

What has been your favorite Mizzou moment?

My favorite Mizzou moment is Welcome Week. Welcome Week is a new event started at MU this year.  I was provided the opportunity to be a Welcome Week leader and it was a great time.  There were many events and programs held each day the week before school.  The most exciting part was being able to become a resource for the incoming freshman and building relationships with them.

When did you know Mizzou was “the one”?

After speaking with representatives in the School of Health Professions in a private meeting and receiving a tour of the Physical Therapy clinic, I knew Mizzou was a great choice for me.  I felt welcomed since the first time I stepped on campus.

Why did you choose your major?

I decided to pursue a degree in health professions because I care about the overall health and well-being of others.  I want to help others and be a part of their progression as they regain and maintain their wellness. I greatly appreciate all the resources and programs provided that focus on Health Professions at Mizzou.  Health professions is a significant career path because there are many important components that will benefit and contribute to an individual’s wellness- physically, mentally and emotionally.
