Dr. Maria Dietrich awarded $2.8 million to expand research

Posted in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences

Congratulations to Maria Dietrich, Associate Professor of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, who was awarded $2.8 million from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders to expand her voice disorder research and continue functional MRI research to better understand laryngeal stress responders.  Her research also will include early career teachers with vocal fatigue to study brain responses underlying voice and speech control in stress responders and nonresponders (based on salivary cortisol responses) in conjunction with muscular differences in voice control using MRI-compatible surface electromyography sensors. Guilherme DeSouza, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, is a Co-Investigator who will classify extralaryngeal sEMG patterns of stress responders and non-responders with and without perceived vocal fatigue using pattern recognition and machine learning.
