Cheak-Zamora Presents at Illinois Statewide Transition Conference

Dr. Nancy Cheak-Zamora, assistant professor in the Department of Health Sciences spoke at the 15th Annual Illinois Statewide Transition Conference.

The Annual Illinois Statewide Transition Conference occured on October 17 and 18 in Collinsville, IL. Dr. Cheak-Zamora presented on “Providing & Assessing Health Care Transition in Youth with ASD & Developmental Disabilities.”

This presentation examined the core principles and guidelines for providing health care transition services with information on individual provider, clinic and system level changes. Dr. Cheak-Zamora discussed implantation of health care transition strategics, tools, and measure to facilitate communication with families about the transition process and youth/young adult independence.

Dr. Cheak-Zamora has vast experience in conducting research on underserved and vulnerable populations. She has developed and implemented several clinical interventions including a Photovoice intervention that used personal photography and group discussions to empower youth with ASD and increase communication and self-determination (published in Journal of Adolescent Research, 2016, Journal of Pediatric Nursing, 2016, and Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, 2016). 

Dr. Cheak-Zamora has nearly 15 years of experience working with children and youth with ASD in both clinical, as an Applied Behavioral Analysis therapist, and research settings.
