SWIM Program is Now Official Make A Splash Local Partner

The MUOT Swimming and Water Instruction Modification (SWIM) program is now an official USA Swimming Foundation Make a Splash Partner.

Founded by MUOT students in 2015, SWIM is an adapted swimming lessons program for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The program is managed by OT student volunteers and not only offers adapted swimming lessons in the community, but also helps train swimming lesson providers who can then provide adapted lessons in other communities. Brittney Stevenson is the faculty adviser for the SWIM program and notes that the partnership between the SWIM program and the USA Swimming Foundation creates opportunities for growth in outreach. “Through the Make a Splash initiative, as a qualified local partner, we now have access to potential grant funding and resources to reach more local children with ASD who need adapted swim programming.”

Dr. Tim Wolf, Occupational Therapy Department Chair is proud of the recognition the SWIM program is earning. “This recognition from USA Swimming Foundation will help bring a heightened awareness of the SWIM program and the good work they do for children with ASD in our community and others around the state.”

The USA Swimming Foundation’s Make a Splash initiative is a national child-focused water safety campaign, which aims to provide the opportunity for every child in America to learn to swim. Through Make a Splash, the USA Swimming Foundation partners with learn-to-swim providers and water safety advocates across the country to provide swimming lessons and educate children and their families on the importance of learning how to swim. The USA Swimming Foundation has invested millions of dollars to provide grants to qualified Local Partner learn-to-swim programs, to spread national awareness, and to bring together strategic partners to end drowning.  To date, more than 6 million children have received the lifesaving gift of swim lessons through the USA Swimming Foundation Make a Splash Local Partner network, comprised of more than 850 qualified lesson providers across the nation.
