SHP’s Inclusive Excellence Award goes to a faculty or staff person who has made outstanding efforts to enhance the environment of inclusion within our school and our campus. This year’s winner, Karen Hayes, is a member of the Dean’s Committee on Inclusion and in her role as an adviser, supports many SHP students of color who seek her out, not only for academic support, but for general guidance in their lives. Her nominator wrote: “She brings a great deal of knowledge to the committee from her extensive reading on best practices to improve diversity, inclusion and equity, and she chairs the iBelong@SHP working group with the aim of creating stronger connections between students, faculty and staff from under-represented backgrounds.” She also serves on the Dean’s Advisory Board, the Chancellor’s Committee on Persons with Disabilities, and is Green Dot certified. She helps gives voice to the challenges of SHP’s low-income students and others who may feel marginalized, mentors young women of color in the community, and mentors high school students online as they apply to college.
Karen also won this year’s MU Inclusive Excellence Award! Thank you for your efforts to make SHP an inclusive home for all members of the SHP family.
