Dr. Mili Kuruvilla-Dugdale, Assistant Professor in the SHP Department of Communication Science and Disorders, and her team received a grant earlier this year from the MU Coulter Translational Program for their project on tongue dysfunction detection. The group is working to develop a software system for early detection and monitoring of tongue-related speech and swallowing dysfunction.
“Our product (Tongue Twister) is a low-cost tool that transforms current subjective tongue performance tasks into objective and actionable data during patient visits to accurately detect and monitor tongue dysfunction,” said Kuruvilla-Dugdale, “[It] can be used as a stand-alone diagnostic app by clinicians worldwide and can also be integrated into existing medical devices (e.g., Computerized Speech Lab, KayPENTAX) that are used in many outpatient clinics, research labs, and hospitals.”
Kuruvilla-Dugdale’s team is in partnership with Passy-uir, Inc., a medical device company to work to commercialize the product. The project is expected to last about one year.
