The Health Connection (THC) began in 1990 under the direction of Marian Minor, PhD, coordinator of research and training and an associate professor of Physical Therapy with the School of Health Professions. She continues to be actively involved with THC and now serves asChair of the Physical Therapy Department with the School of Health Professions, University of Missouri - Columbia.
"Staying physically active is crucial to everyone's health," Dr. Minor says. "But in the past older people and those with physical limitations have been excluded from the fitness scene. So, it's really hard for many people to find a place that's safe, supportive and positive socially. THC not only is a place for people to exercise, but also is a platform to do other community-based activities and makes what we learn from our research available to the community."
In 2001 THC became part of the School of Health Professions as part of its mission for outreach and education. THC remains affiliated with MU Health Care. During this time THC has expanded from a smaller location. In addition to being a full-service wellness and fitness center, we continue to offer other services such as group fitness classes, massage therapy, cholesterol screenings, Travel Connections, personal training, computer classes for seniors and special events.
In 2002 the Central Missouri Arthritis Center partnered with THC to expand educational offerings in the community. THC continues to be a site for cutting edge exercise research. In 2003, the National Council on Aging has selected THC as one of 30 programs nationwide that provides high quality, value-added programming for seniors.
"The Health Connection is a comprehensive and innovative health and fitness facility designed to meet the needs of individuals who desire to improve their health and wellness through group or individual programs."
-- Richard Oliver, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Health Professions
